چکیده
Ð Promoting sustainable development requires evaluating the technical and policy options that will facilitate the adoption and use of energy ecient and less polluting cooking stoves and practices. The transition from traditional to modern fuels and devices has been explained by the ``energy ladder'' model that suggests that with increasing auence, a progression is expected from traditional biomass fuels to more advanced and less polluting fuels. In this paper we evaluate the energy ladder model utilizing data from a four-year (1992±96) case study of a village in Mexico and from a large-scale survey from four states of Mexico. We show that an alternate ``multiple fuel'' model of stove and fuel management based on the observed pattern of household accumulation of energy options, rather than the simple progression depicted in the traditional energy ladder scenario, more accurately depicts cooking fuel use patterns in rural households. The ``multiple fuel'' model integrates four factors demonstrated to be essential in household decision making under conditions of resource scarcity or uncertainty: (a) economics of fuel and stove type and access conditions to fuels, (b) technical characteristics of cookstoves and cooking practices; (c) cultural preferences; and (d) health impacts. This model also allows better estimates of the expected fuelwood demand and indoor air pollution in rural households. Ó 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Ð Global commodity chain (GCC) analysis has been concerned mainly with examining power relations in global manufacturing industries, although it has been preoccupied increasingly by the question of how developing country (DC) producers can upgrade. This paper extends GCC analysis to ``traditional'' primary commodities, where international traders exercise the ``driving'' role, and suggests a ne...

Ð This paper attempts to integrate the concern for human development in the present with that in the future. In arguing for sustainable human development, it appeals to the notion of ethical ``universalism''Ðan elementary demand for impartiality of claimsÐapplied within and between generations. Economic sustainability is often seen as a matter of intergenerational equity, but the speci®cation o...

Ð Although there has been increasing interest in trying to link the livelihoods of people living near natural resources to the conservation of those resources, there has been little attempt to systematically assess or measure this linkage. We develop a conceptual framework for de®ning the linkage between livelihood activities and conservation. We then develop a scale to assess the strength of l...

Ð This paper focuses on how three actors of development interventions negotiate and manage their interrelations, interests, goals and outcomes of action in contexts of social inequality and relative power. The research takes an action-oriented approach to analyzing the structured and active representation of roles and interests in development initiatives. The key question is how socially hierar...
